Avocado can appear in meals with fewer carbohydrates, but it is not a carbohydrate-free food. To evaluate a portion, choose a food composition source compatible with the food and weigh the edible part to be consumed.
Using ‘one avocado’ as a measure leaves the calculation imprecise. Size, variety, and pulp quantity vary. A whole unit does not represent a fixed portion.
What TACO reports
The Brazilian Food Composition Table, TACO, records 6.0 g of carbohydrates per 100 g of raw avocado, considering the edible part. This is the data used in this example, not a universal value for any variety or avocado-based product.
In TACO, carbohydrates calculated by difference include fiber. Therefore, do not call this number net carbohydrates nor automatically apply to it the rule of a Brazilian label. Composition tables and labeling may use different conventions.
How to calculate a portion
For 50 g of pulp, the calculation is 6.0 × 50 ÷ 100 = 3.0 g of carbohydrates, on the same basis as TACO. This calculation describes a food quantity; it does not establish a recommended portion for all people.
- Remove skin and seed before weighing the pulp you will eat.
- Confirm that the consulted record corresponds to the raw food.
- Use the same source and convention when recording the meal.
- Add the ingredients added to the avocado.
Spoons can serve to prepare food, but they vary in volume and in how much pulp they carry. When the calculation needs to be more consistent, weighing in grams is more useful.
Does the TACO value apply to Hass avocados?
Not automatically. The Hass variety avocado should not receive the TACO data simply because it is also called avocado. If a table identifies another variety, check the specific record and how the nutrients were calculated.
Also do not mix the carbohydrate from one source with the fiber from another to produce a supposedly more exact number. The data may refer to samples, varieties, and different methods.
Simple preparation and ready-made products
Pulp with lemon and herbs, avocado in salad or accompanied by eggs are usage ideas, not tested recipes or meals with calculated macros. Sugar, condensed milk, beverages, and other complements change the total.
Industrialized guacamole needs to be evaluated by its own packaging. Check composition, portion, preservation, and what accompanies the product. The fact that it contains avocado does not allow copying the values of raw fruit for the entire mixture.
Store cut pulp under refrigeration and care for utensil hygiene. Discard spoiled foods and do not adopt an invented home shelf life for any preparation. The choice of food and quantity does not guarantee ketosis, weight loss, or blood glucose control.
